CHURCHES
- The Berwick Evangelical Church – The church was located three miles south and two miles east of Cairo in section 5 of Harrison township in the northeast corner of the section. It was formed in 1898 and many of the old settlers in the neighborhood attended the church. The Berwick school held their Christmas programs there. Later the building was used less and less and finally was sold and torn down for the lumber. The proceeds from the sale and the large bell were given to a church in Grand Island.
- The Bluff Center Church – It was located three miles south and four miles west of Cairo. The church was organized in 1911 and in 1914 the old Grand Army of the Republic hall was moved from Cameron township and used as the church building for the congregation. In 1969 the congregation disbanded and the church building was sold.
- The Cairo Baptist Church – The church was formed in the Runelsburg area in 1883 east of Cairo and held its first services in a sod schoolhouse. After the town of Cairo was established, the congregation began meeting in the new town at the Grand Army of the Republic hall. In 1901 the church pictured here was built and it served the congregation until 1986 when a new church building replaced this one.
- The Cairo Methodist Church – This church building was originally located on the James Hulett farm two miles south of Cairo and was called the Berwick Methodist Episcopal Church. It was built in the early 1880’s and was moved into the new town of Cairo by teams of horses in September, 1886. Around 2002 the congregation built a new church and the old church building was sold and is now used as a residence.
- Christ Lutheran Church – The Lutheran congregation in Cairo was organized in 1921 and in November of that year the congregation moved the old Cameron church to five acres of land on the west side of town. The church was moved to town by several teams of horses. The frame building served the congregation until 1963 when a new brick structure was built west of the original church. The old building was sold to a Mennonite congregation that continued to hold worship services there.
- The Mennonite Church was located eight miles north and one mile east of Cairo. Peter Beckler gave several acres of land for the location of the church and the building was erected in 1908, 40 x 50 feet in size. In 1970 a new church building was dedicated, and the old building was torn down.
